Abstract

The study highlights the need for an integrated approach to the political management of protected areas, involving strategic planning, multi-stakeholder cooperation and a long-term commitment to the conservation of the natural environment and biodiversity. The Q methodology is applied, which is recommended to elicit views on environmental issues and policies in ecological economics research. Furthermore, it can identify common and controversial issues and perspectives in the population, which is important because policies directed toward commonly shared concerns would be likely to enjoy social and political support, and be effective. The results identified four main discourses, two of which have a proactive attitude, identifying both ecological and economic benefits in their current management; the other two have a decidedly more critical vision from both a political and economic point of view.
